Bring history alive

A tour by Scotia Heritage brings history alive by visiting the locations and recalling the tales of yesteryear.

As a teacher you need

Accurate material, well presented and, most of all, time to do the research. Let me solve that problem. History is my passion. Researching history is my skill.  Let me present old Dundee to your pupils.

As an historian and guide

I can convey the following topics that cover all things Dundonian.  Rest assured that the material is thoroughly checked and accurate. As a professional tour guide I am experienced at conveying information at all stages of understanding.

The topics listed below are offered as site specific guided walks.

Jute, jam and journalism

An introduction to the trades that made Dundee famous and illustrating why Dundee was known as a women's town.

 Meadowside

This former swampland was cleared and drained to make way for the epitome of Victorian entrepreneurship and architecture.

The Royal Burgh

Medieval life based around the Mercat Cross, the markets and the Old Steeple, sea-going lives and regular occupations by enemy forces.

Ecclesiastical Dundee

Known to have more religious establishments than any other Scottish town your guide has studied most of the ecclesiastical sites in the city. This tour rediscovers these establishments and their social impacts.

Maritime district

Tales of the whalers, the RRS Discovery, the frigate Unicorn and the Sea Captain’s House. Discover the ancient shorelines and harbours that brought wealth to a royal burgh.

Dundee Law

This overview of the city covers the natural setting and 800 years of enterprise. Marvel at the natural setting and hear how Dundee was first to achieve innovative events.

The Howff

Explore this former orchard of a medieval monastery and learn of graveyard fashions, grave robbers and the people who shaped Dundee. This site has connections to the 9 Incorporated Trades, Mary Queen of Scots and Robert the Bruce.

Indoor subjects

Although all of the above subjects can be adapted to a classroom setting the following are best suited to indoor discussions.

  • Period in time
If concentrating on a particular period such as medieval, Georgian or Victorian a session can utilise archive images or maps that show buildings, extent of development and people's dress.  I can convey social conditions, expectations and occupations.
    • Literature

This subject takes a sample of work from connections. The timespan ranges from the Reformation through the 1707 Union and World War I to the present.

    • Journalism

A fuller history of Dundee publishers John Leng and DC Thomson that uses material not in the public domain.

    • Old Steeple

As the author of a comprehensive guidebook I can supply a very detailed account of St. Mary’s Tower and the City Churches.

    • Twin Cities and Namesakes

Alternatively, combine geography, history and culture by discovering more about Dundee's twin cities and namesakes around the world.

    • Christmas celebrations

Would your class like to hear about this new 'tradition' of Christmas and why it was introduced?  We can explore how the Scots really spent Christmas Day and their preference for the New Year.
